It seems to me that somewhere through time, clothing lost its way. Long gone are the days when women dressed to be prim and proper. Sometimes, I like to imagine what it must have been like to live in a time when people dressed eloquently every day.
I’m a thrift shop girl, and one of my weaknesses is vintage dresses — you know, like the kind Aunt B would wear. I’ve fallen in love with the vintage silhouettes, and I love how the fabric breathes and stretches just enough. Plus-size vintage dresses are few and far between, but when I find one it feels like I’ve stumbled onto gold!
A few weeks ago, I was out and about and I was introduced to someone who told me about a boutique in Nashville that carried vintage, pin-up inspired clothing, and I was excited to check it out. Later in the conversation, she mentioned that they also carry plus-sizes, and I was ecstatic. There’s just something about vintage glamour that makes every woman feel unstoppable. Needless to say, visiting Bettie Page Clothing was on the top of my to-do list.
Bettie Page’s persona inspired the creation of this 1950s collection. These vintage pieces are kept as close to the original patterns as possible and are given a bit of a modern twist with fun patterns and hardware. All of the dresses go by a “name” such as Bridgette, and a lot of times that dress will be made with a few variations, like the color and skirt type.
Almost everything in the store is available in XS to 4X, but it’s important to keep in mind that they are cut as vintage patterns and depending on the fit, a 4X may fit up to a size 22/24. Bettie Page once said “A body is a terrible thing to waste,” and Tatyana Khomyakova, the collection’s designer, kept that in mind when designing this collection to fit women of all sizes.
Inside Bettie Page Clothing, you will find a huge selection of quality clothing that will last forever, and the variations of dresses range from sequins to tweed, from cotton to brocade. This store is a must for those of you looking for something to wear to a special event or anytime you want to feel glamorous and sexy.
Bettie Page carries a lot of dresses, but the store also has a few vintage-inspired jackets hanging on the walls as well as some adorable skirt and top sets. The location off of Broadway also houses the Beach Bash collection, which is a bit more casual and sold at a lower price point. There also are tons of vintage-inspired accessories — shoes, belts, sunglasses and even Spanx!
Clothing alone does not define a great store; it’s also the staff, the atmosphere and the experience that’s created for you, the customer. From the moment I walked into Bettie Page, not only did I feel welcomed, I also felt comfortable. The staff is there to offer as little or as much assistance as you’d like, and they all seemed to know their brand and were happy to be a part of it.
Stumbling upon stores like this one is rare, and that’s why you should pay the ladies at Bettie Page Clothing of Nashville a visit!
